Bridgerton Revives Regency Fashion

Chances are, you’ve heard something about Netflix’s new hit series, Bridgerton. There are lots of plot twists and romantic encounters that leave us on the edge of our seats, but ultimately, it is the fashion that has left us completely smitten with the Regency-era London Piece.

The show, which was adapted from Julia Quinn's bestselling novels, follows the social season in Regency London, has more than 63 million viewers worldwide.

We were blown away by the amazing characters and vivid displays of the British countryside, but watching the pastel-coloured gowns and layers of extravagant jewellery featured throughout the season from the comfort of couches in sweatpants provided a much needed sense of escapism.

Costume Designer Ellen Mirojnick, created over 7,500 elaborate looks for the show to interpret the 1800s fashion in a jaw-dropping, relevant manner. The viewer is instantly transported into a world where lavish parties, extravagant gowns and layers and layers of accessories are the norm.

The entire wardrobe isn’t an exact replica of fashion from the 1800s, but costume designer Ellen Mirojnick referenced colour palettes, fabrications, and silhouettes from the 1950s and 1960s.

As an added bonus, the show's costumes had lots of special hidden meanings.

For example, as the prominent family of the show’s social season, the Bridgerton’s pale blues, greens, and silvers showcase the family's societal standing. These whispers of pale colours symbolize the family's class and standing.

On the other hand, the Featheringtons, are draped in bright shades of yellow, pink, and green, which symbolize that they're outsiders.
