The Space Between Worlds by Myles Igwebuike

The Space Between Worlds by Myles Igwebuike

For Myles Igwebuike's first solo exhibition in Nigeria, he demonstrated his media mastery by showcasing a composite collection comprising works in textile, sculpture, painting and prints. In works like 'Kedu', Myles takes rejected pieces of akwete textile and reclaims their history and meaning, interpreting 'greeting' and 'community' from that which was erstwhile discarded.

THE RIGHT TO OPACITY

'The Space Between Worlds: A Cartography of Self' is an invitation into an undefined world where meaning is not rooted in rigidity, and form is not coerced but translated. The materials that feature in this exhibition are not merely media, but partners. The artist approaches materials not as passive, but sentient entities that teach as well as they are formed. In Igwebuike's practice, the studio is a laboratory, and materials' right to resistance is respected and incorporated.

A CONTINUOUS MAKING

Multidisciplinary artist, researcher and cultural strategist Myles Igwebuike holds the philosophical idea that design and art are crucial tools in future-making, and this ideology is reflected in the diplomacy, urbanism and heritage context of the work he creates. The event was well-attended by art aficionados, curators and critics from Nigeria and abroad.
