Nature
OCTOBER 2O - NOVEMBER 17
Temple Muse is thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition, Nubian Nature, opening to the public on the 20th of October at our store. This exclusive showcase features the remarkable works of Dr. Lambert Shumbusho, a leader in modern organic design across West Africa. Known for his visionary approach to art-furniture, Dr. Shumbusho's creations breathe new life into natural fragments, transforming discarded wood into stunning works of art that embody the raw beauty and spirit of the African landscape.
Dr. Shumbusho’s journey as an artist began over two decades ago, inspired by the ecological devastation he observed in the Niger Delta. Through his work, he honors nature by repurposing fallen tree trunks, branches, and roots—materials often abandoned or overlooked by local communities. His pieces are primarily carved from hardwood, particularly the sacred Iroko Tree (Oba Igi in Yoruba), which holds deep cultural significance across West Africa. Each piece is meticulously selected for its unique form and hidden potential, kindling the artist's creativity as he brings forth furniture that blurs the line between functional design and fine art.
In Nubian Nature, visitors will witness a collection that captures Dr. Shumbusho’s deep connection with nature, his passion for preserving Africa's rapidly diminishing natural resources, and his masterful ability to reveal the inner beauty of weathered wood. The exhibition will feature hand-carved coffee tables, chairs, and consoles, each one distinct in its character and shape, polished with natural wax to enhance the inherent beauty of the material.
A Harvard-trained petroleum lawyer by profession, Dr. Shumbusho’s journey from law to art is as unconventional as his work. A self-taught artist, he honed his craft by observing the effects of deforestation and environmental neglect, transforming what others deemed waste into pieces of cultural and environmental significance. His work is not only a testament to the resilience of nature but also to the power of art as a medium for environmental awareness.
We invite you to explore Nubian Nature, a celebration of Africa’s natural beauty and a tribute to the continent’s rich artistic heritage. Join us in experiencing the transformative power of nature through the eyes of one of Africa’s most visionary artists.
