Temple Muse, with SMO Contemporary Art, is pleased to present to you SOLE TO SOUL, an exhibition of works by Kenny Adewuyi, curated by Sandra Mbafeno Obiago. This exhibition is proudly supported by The Macallan.
Kenny is a master observer, and his sculptures speak of the rise and falls of life's twists and turns. He expresses humanity through rough and smooth bronze surfaces, careful hues and meticulously chosen patina, elongated limbs and feet, and simple poses.
As an award-winning draughtsman, kenny has a deep understanding of human anatomy which he applies in his creation of exaggerated human forms featuring extremely long and large legs and limbs and small heads. His works cast a special focus on the subject's feet, attesting to vulnerability and the deeply personal nature of each human being's journey.
Kenny draws inspiration from nature and the observances of life around him, and that is what he aims to portray through his deeply moving work; whether as bronze sculptures or as sketches. He attributes his artistic style to an accidental discovery through continuous experimentation and playful exploration which over time became refined into the self-identifying form it has today.
His creative process begins with modelling his design in clay and then creating a mold using plaster. After the mold sets, he separates it from the original clay work and reassembles the mold to make a wax cast. He then encases the wax replica in a second mold, known as the refractory mold, which is able to withstand high temperatures, and places it in a kiln for firing. The heating melts the wax and leaves a hollow cavity in the refractory mold, which molten bronze is poured into and eventually refined, adding his preferred patina and other finishing touches.
This drawn-out process reflects the artist's dedication to the exacting process of quality art creation, an intense journey that transforms the artist as surely as it births the new sculpture.
Kenny Adewuyi is a renowned figurative sculptor and draughtsman who holds an MFA in Sculpture from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria. His professional career spans over 3 decades and features a transformative art residency and wildly successful solo and group exhibitions, locally and internationally.
The artist has a preference for techniques that emphasise the value of ‘process’, one of his key ideologies, and his works are characterised by elongated limbs, large feet and small heads–depicting the imbalance of nature.
